Marrickville-South Sydney Bicycle Group (MASSBUG) is a Bicycle User Group (BUG) established in 1991 and affiliated with Bicycle New South Wales.
We represent everyone who rides a bike (or wants to) in the Local Government Area (LGA) of Marrickville in inner Sydney, Australia.
Neighbouring BUGs are: BikeSydney covering the now enlarged City of Sydney Council area, BIKEast covering the eastern suburbs, LBUG covering Leichhardt Council area, AshBUG covering Ashfield Council area, Bike South West covering Canterbury & Bankstown, StGeorge BUG covering Hurstville, Kogarah & Rockdale, and BurstBUG covering Burwood & Strathfield.
Our vision is for a safe, healthy, vibrant community whose planning and infrastructure provide for greater share of transport by walking and cycling, in order that the personal, community and environmental benefits of more sustainable transport can be realised. We also regard public transport services as essential.
"The Marrickville local government area was originally owned by the Cadigal people who were dispossessed by European invasion more than 200 years ago. Today the area encompasses the suburbs of Dulwich Hill, Lewisham, Petersham, Marrickville, Stanmore, St Peters, Sydenham, Tempe, Enmore and parts of Newtown and Camperdown. It has a population of over 73,000 residents and is located in Sydney’s inner west. The whole of the area lies between 4 and 10km kilometres from the centre of the city...."
Our Strategic Plan for 2005 sets out our priority work areas for this year and the current status.
We work with Marrickville Council and state government bodies (e.g. RTA & Area Health Services) for the improvement of cycling infrastructure, urban amenity, community health and safety. We also provide information, advice and rides for members of the local community and local schools. We can help less experienced cyclists with route advice and in some cases a buddy service - where we will find someone to ride with you for the first day or week or more. We can answer questions on road rules for cyclists and what to do if you have a problem on the road.
We meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:15 for 7:30pm at Newtown Neighbourhood Centre. All welcome.
