Alexandra Canal is a disused industrial waterway joining the rapidly progressing Green Square development with the mouth of the Cooks River at the International Terminal of the airport.
The Minister for Urban Affairs and Planning and Member for Marrickville, Andrew Refshauge officially opened exhibition of 'The Draft Alexandra Canal Masterplan' on 5 December 2000.
On several occasions in speech, Dr Refshauge emphasised the need to fast-track constructing a shared path beside the Canal. The path is essential to provide access for the public so they can see this resource currently hidden from view.
MASSBUG has been lobbying for several years for a path along the canal as a alternative to the dangerous Princes Hwy at Tempe, which is currently the only link between the city and southern suburbs.
The South Sydney Development Corporation sought public comment on the Alexandra Canal in the form of a survey attached to an explanatory brochre. A copy of the brochure is available here.
MASSBUG combined with, BikeEast (Eastern Suburbs Bicycle User Group), BikeSydney (Sydney City Bicycle User Group), Bicycle New South Wales, and University of New South Wales Transport Program in putting together a detailed response.
