Marrickville Transport Action Group News Update23 March 2007
We have received the following email from The Greens candidate for
Heffron, addressed to MTAG members. Ben came to our last meeting to
find out about the Johnstons Creek Extension issues and continuing
issues at Campbell St (Heffron).
We welcome any statements from other candidates for Marrickville and
Heffron electorates, though unfortunately it is quite late. When you go
to vote tomorrow, question the booth workers and candidates you see on
their transport policies and on their stance on the issues you care about.
Vote wisely :o)

Dear MTAG members,
I wanted to write to assure you of my and the Greens' support for
sustainable transport solutions for Sydney's inner west. During the
recent Marrickville by-election, MTAG were involved in the successful
campaign to lift the road reservation at Campbell Street.
However, recently it has been revealed that the remaining reservations
in Heffron might be used as the entrance to an inner- west motorway,
and/or as one end of the proposed F6.
The Greens strongly oppose both road projects. We believe the only way
to be confident that the projects do not proceed is to lift the road
reservation at Campbell St. We are campaigning for this road reservation
to be lifted - an issue that has recently been taken up by the Southern
Courier after we raised it with them.
More broadly, these road projects reflect the growing need for road
transport that will follow the expansion of Port Botany. We do not
support the proposed Port Botany expansion, which will add an additional
2,000 trucks a day to our roads.
Sydney needs to make a choice between the continued expansion of road
infrastructure designed for cars and trucks, and investment in public
transport and bike infrastructure. The Greens are proposing to redirect
billions of dollars worth of funding from new road projects like the F6
and Inner West motorway into public transport projects, such as light
rail, upgrading train lines and increasing the frequency of bus
services. We support road planning that provides for safe, efficient and
pleasant bike travel, and the facilities that must accompany the
expansion of bike travel - such as bike parking at train stations.
We believe that with a commitment to properly funding sustainable
transport solutions we can transition from a car dependent society into
a truly sustainable city.
Yours,
Ben Spies-Butcher
Green candidate for Heffron
