ELECTION CANDIDATES

(Sydney City & Marrickville Council areas)

Local government elections are this Saturday (27th March). To inform your vote, here is some information about the extent to which the candidates support cycling. Please forward this link/message to your friends and colleagues. Media releases have been sent to the local press.

Would-be councillors all indicate support (generally strong support) for better infrastructure for cycling, from basic bicycle parking in shopping areas to dedicated bicycle corridors. In Marrickville the only exception is the Labor party who declined to respond and based on verbal feedback appear to be not supportive of cycling.

Group 1 comprehensive policies and strongly supportive (in alphabetical order)

City of Sydney (all worth reading in full)

Marrickville

Group 2 generally supportive (maybe lack of understanding of issues/less effort)

City of Sydney

Marrickville

Group 3 indicated basic support

Marrickville: Dymon Scoullis

Group 4 non-responders - Ask other candidates now or on polling day what they will do to promote cycling if elected!

These responses were to questions in our Marrickville letter & City of Sydney letter to candidates for the coming local government elections. The questions were about views of candidates towards improving the liveability of local communities, the role of local government in improving conditions for cycling and physical activity and what they would do to support cycling, if elected.

Any questions or comments to mailto:massbug**(at)**massbug.org.au(Replace**(at)** with @)

We will accept late responses/corrections from candidates.

Happy voting,

MASSBUG Local Government Election Committee, 21/03/2004

Council elections vote for candidates who support cycling

(Ashfield Council)

Local government elections are this Saturday (27th March). To inform your vote, here is some information about which candidates support cycling. Please forward this message to your friends and colleagues. Media releases have been sent to the local press.

Would-be councillors generally indicate strong support for better infrastructure for cycling, from basic bicycle parking in shopping areas to dedicated bicycle corridors. The Labor party did not respond.

Group 1 comprehensive policies and strongly supportive

The responses that indicated the greatest support of cycling and were the most considered were received from Dr Marc Rerceretnam and the Greens (Col Jones). We also received an excellent response from Cecily Gray (by post - we'll try and upload it soon).

Group 2 generally supportive (maybe lack of understanding of issues/less effort)

Supportive responses were also received from Chris ONeil, David Blackah and the No Politics party candidates, Mary Hawkins, Monica Wangmann, Tasson Mahmoud, Emma Brooks Maher and Tracey Schneiders. It was clear that the majority understood the important role that cycling plays in improving traffic congestion, reducing air pollution, and the potential for reducing childhood obesity.

Group 3 indicated basic support

Supportive but limited replies were received by Karin Cheung, Martin Bain, and Narelle Coxhead.

Group 4 non-responders Ask other candidates now or on polling day what they will do to promote cycling if elected!

These responses were to questions mailed by the Ashfield Bicycle User Group (ASHBUG) to all Ashfield candidates of the coming local government elections. The questions were about views of candidates towards improving the liveability of local communities, the role of local government in improving conditions for cycling and physical activity and what they would do to support cycling, if elected.
