The HCAT project aims to: "research, implement and evaluate innovative measures aimed at promoting and facilitating increased cycling trips in the Hawthorne Canal corridor"and is being supported by four local Councils ( Leichhardt, Marrickville, Ashfield and Canterbury, Marrickville and South Sydney Bicycle User Group (MASSBUG), Leichhardt Bicycle User Group (LBUG) and funded by the NSW Government's Environmental Trust. The project staff are working with local organisations ("trip generators" such as workplaces, shopping centres, schools and swimming pools) to take simple and affordable steps to encourage people to cycle. Cycling is a healthy, cheap, environmentally-friendly form of transport and recreation that most people can enjoy. It is the ideal transport mode for short trips of 1-5 kilometres which are over a third of all journeys. Actions undertaken as part of the project include providing information (such as maps of cycling routes), helping improve conditions for cycling (for example, through increased bicycle parking and cycleways), conducting events (like family bike days) and running bicycle maintenance, riding training and a buddy system for new cyclists. The HCAT project is designed for the inner-west, where parking is at a premium, where many residents are looking to improve their health and fitness and where there are already quiet back streets and green spaces which make ideal cycling routes. The HCAT project complements local community efforts to establish a Greenway corridor from Iron Cove to Cooks River.
