JAN GEHL

10 December 2007

Subject: The Gehl Report – A Blueprint for a Greener, more Vital, and Connected City

To all members and supporters of Bicycle NSW,

A big thank you for your support for the King Street separated bicycle path which is now scheduled for completion by the middle of next year!

In recent weeks many of you will have seen media reports about plans the City of Sydney Council have to transform the centre of Sydney making it a more bicycle and pedestrian friendly environment. The plans, developed by acclaimed international planner Professor Jan Gehl from Copenhagen, are available on the City of Sydney website at http://www.sydneymedia.com.au/html/3449-the-gehl-report--a-blueprint-for-greener-more-vital-connected-cbd.asp?orig=Home

Importantly the proposals include recommendations for effective links with bicycle facilities from outside of the immediate City of Sydney Council area, and the leadership shown by the City of Sydney is encouraging other local government areas to follow suit with investment in bicycle infrastructure to encourage healthy, sustainable and economic transport and recreation choices. Recent announcements by the NSW Government in relation to funding from the NSW Environmental Trust for the “On Your Bike” program (Click here for 2 new positions at BNSW) and the continued creation of bicycle infrastructure in our major transport corridors indicates a growing awareness within government of the important societal level benefits flowing from increased bicycle riding. The challenges presented by Climate Change, Community Health and Traffic Congestion are high on the list of priorities for governments around the world.

But for Jan Gehl’s plan to succeed the Lord Mayor Clover Moore will need the financial and political support of Kevin Rudd’s newly elected Federal Government and Morris Iemma’s State Government. We are asking you to write to each of these leaders and express your support for the plan, which will not only make riding in Sydney more pleasant and safer, but will serve as a symbol for governments around Australia and the world of what can be achieved with vision and commitment
