Bike Plan Council Works 2007
MASSBUG's Marrickville Council Budget 2007 Submission
03 June 2007
MASSBUG's submission to Marrickville Council's draft Management Plan and budget 2007 includes a range of recommendations for most Council divisions. Key, though, is support for the extra $100,000 for accelerating the implementation of the bike plan and a recommendation that Marrickville Council should allocate an extra $50,000 for the Parramatta Road underpass (GreenWay project) since Ashfield and Leichhardt have already included it in their budgets.

Work continues apace with the forward progress through Council of the Marrickville Bike Plan and Integrated Transport Plan. The Integrated Transport Plan underscores the importance of bicycles as part of an environmentally friendly and socially responsible network of personal transport.
During January's Council meeting the BikePlan was greeted with near unanimous acceptance but that it should be emphasized that the funding of the plan was not yet secured. This will not however prevent putting in place the proposed changes when funds become available.
As it would have been difficult if not impossible to implement all the engineering works and social programs required at one time the plan was devised so that prioritised works could proceed as funding became available. Funding has been secured for the first of these works, the provision of a dedicated bike lane between Newtown and Petersham.
It would be prudent to offer support to councilors and staff in the implementation of the BikePlan by offering considered feedback and positive support where and when appropriate.
The documents relating to the bike plan and integrated transport strategy from Marrickville Council's Technical Services Committee.
Further information is available on the Cycling in Marrickville page of the Council's Website or by contacting council direct by email, fax or phone, letter, or in person at one of the council offices, or by contacting your ward representative.
