1. Name
The name of the group is Marrickville-South Sydney Bicycle Group (MASSBUG).
2. Aims
MASSBUG encourages and promotes the benefits of cycling within the Marrickville area. Recognising the benefits that cycling has across the community MASSBUG works with similar groups and individuals to promote and encourage cycling within and sometimes beyond the above geographical area.
MASSBUG endorses a consensus approach to decision to achieve an inclusive community based organisation.
3. Objectives
The objectives of MASSBUG are:
a) To promote cycling for transport and recreation as a means to improve quality of life and protect the environment.
b) To promote education of cyclists and other road users in the interest of road safety.
c) To advocate enforcement of the rights and obligations of cyclists.
d) To advocate engineering and equipment appropriate for the use of cyclists.
e) To promote the standing of cyclists in the community.
4. Policies
MASSBUG can develop and publish policy guidelines that may assist in the meeting of the group’s objectives. Policy guidelines are endorsed by members and can be reviewed on request of any member.
5. Membership
Members are drawn from the Marrickville area, however residency in the area is not a requirement of membership on the following provisions:
a) Membership is open to any individual who accepts the aims and objectives of MASSBUG.
b) Membership is available to both financial and non-financial members.
i) Financial members are entitled to participate in MASSBUG policy and campaign decisions.
ii) Non-financial members can contribute to MASSBUG agenda items and participate in group discussions but do not have decision making entitlements.
iii) In reaching group decisions financial members will consider the views of non-financial members.
6. Decision Making
MASSBUG endorses a consensus approach to decision making within the group. Decision making is based upon the following principles:
a) Respect the opinion of all group members.
b) Each member is entitled to express their opinion on topics raised in either meetings or by way of other communication (including electronic communication) between group members.
c) Members are respectful of the time they take to express their opinion to ensure that time is available to all members to participate in group discussions.
d) MASSBUG arrives at decisions through a process of consensus. In the event that consensus cannot be reached individual members are entitled to pursue the issue but will not use the MASSBUG name to endorse any such opinion or action.
e) In discussion, members will avoid discriminatory, inflammatory language and comments.
7. Meetings
Meetings will be conducted under the following arrangements:
a) Meetings will be held at a time and date agreed by the members.
b) At the start of meetings the group will appoint a chair and minute taker for the meeting.
c) An agenda will be drafted for each meeting and can be circulated to members prior to the meeting. The agenda is confirmed or amended at the start of the meeting.
d) During meetings members show courtesy and respect to all members and share the time of the meeting responsibly.
8. Office Bearers
Formal appointment of office bearers will be limited to the basic requirements of compliance with the expectations of Bicycle NSW. Any of these appointments will be by group consensus and not the majority vote of members. Such positions may be shared by two or more individuals.
MASSBUG aims to provide a more open and inclusive method of operation that doesn’t necessarily follow traditional power structures. Accordingly rather than appointing office bearers the group endorses individuals to carry out functions and activities that support the objectives of MASSBUG.
9. Funds
MASSBUG will collect membership fees from individual members.
MASSBUG will accept financial contributions from other sources where there is agreement by members and such funding supports its objectives.
10. Issues other than those covered by the Objectives
MASSBUG welcomes information and debate that strengthens the local community. However MASSBUG will not endorse causes or actions that fall outside the objectives of the group or are unlawful.
