Every May, councils must prepare a management plan and budget and take into account feedback from the community. This is your chance to tell your Council what it should be doing more/less of. For more details, see the BUG Management Plan Guide.

This is the most recent version of the massbug charter uploaded 14 November 2005.
The bike route through Prince Alfred Park (between Cleveland St and Central Station) is under threat, with the Masterplan suggesting commuter cycling be banned in the park, and that cyclists use Cleveland Street instead (!!!!). Download this flyer for more information, or to print off and hand out copies at the Park. Comments close on Friday 28/10/05.
Here is the Draft Annual Report, better known as the "2005 MASSBUG Year in Review". Please send any comments or corrections to Brenda. (6 Oct 05)
Our submission to Marrickville Council's Draft Management Plan and budget for 2005-2007, in which we identify where bicycles fit in almost every area of Council and give them some great ideas to follow up (June 2005)
City 40km/h Proposal We wrote a submission on the City of Sydney's proposal for a 40km/h speed limit for Central Sydney because many of our members ride to work in (or through) the City. We strongly supported the proposal but asked for it to be extended to cover a wider area including William Street all the way to Kings Cross (since there will be a bike lane all the way) and further areas of high pedestrian activity like Newtown, Erskineville and Redfern centres. We also asked for there to be a 40km/h zone in the pedestrian thoroughfare between Macdonaldtown Station and King Street including the one-way section of Wilson St, in order to improve the safety of the soon-to-be contra-flow lane for bicycles. We suggested that a high bicycle activity area like Wilson Street (the "Bicycle Highway of the Inner West") should also be 40km/h. (4/12/04)
Marrickville Bike Plan Brief Marrickville Council staff, commendably, are involving MASSBUG right from the start for the new Marrickville Bike Plan. They sent us the draft brief for consultants which we convened a special meeting to discuss. Our resulting response made a few pages of suggestions including that the bike strategy should take a whole-of-council (not just engineering) approach and should be linked into the rest of Council's policies and plans. As a result and with the input of Council's new Sustainable Transport Planner, two briefs (engineering and planning/rest of Council) are being finalised. (Oct 2004)

Our submission to the Ministry of Transport's Review of the CBD Parking Levy gives our recommendations for improving the Parking Levy. We believe it should improve access to public transport for all users, not just motorists; It should be more consistent with whole-of-govt policy by increasing cycling (more lockers; parking rails; incentives for CBD building end-of-trip facilities; cycleways); and projects must not increase car use as they have in the past. This submission is getting widespread support. (3/1/04)
Our submission on Marrickville Council's Section 94 Contributions Plan explains why a greater proportion of developer contributions should be spent on cycling facilities. (3/1/04)
Recommendation for City of Sydney bike plan, to widen the footpath for the shared path section along Chalmers Street (between Prince Alfred Park and Devonshire St) (18/12/03)
Our submission to the outstanding South Sydney Council Draft Bike Plan Part A(9Mb) and Part B(9.6Mb). This bike plan will set a new standard for New South Wales when it is passed by Council early next year. Not only is it well integrated into the rest of Council's work, but it has a comprehensive and well thought out route network, in some cases offers alternative routes for less experienced cyclists, and includes fantastic contra-flow lanes or signage to let bikes go the other direction in one-way streets in all the places where we need them. It won't be long until you have a contra-flow green bike lane in Wilson St one-way section, with concrete bubbles to keep the cars away and gaps through all the street narrowings. South Sydney Council deserves a medal for this bike plan. We can't wait to see it implemented over the next couple of years. 15/12/03
Our submission to the South Sydney Council Draft Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (lacks the comprehensiveness of the bike plan). 15/12/03
Our submission to the South Sydney Council Draft Land Use and Transport Development Control Plan which, as is, will increase allowable parking, leading to increased traffic. We make some constructive suggestions on how to improve it. (3/12/03)
Our submission to the Sydney Airport Draft Masterplan on the cycling issues involved. Thanks to Rachel for preparing the material and to Tony J for the initial research and for identifying some key issues. (28/10/03)
Our Submission to Marrickville Council Recreation Strategic Plan was well received - it focuses on suggestions for implementation of the plan, including for more Shared Zones in quieter streets to supplement open space where children and young people can play and socialise. And it covers the social capital benefits of less traffic. (27/10/03)

Marrickville Audit: In early 2002 MASSBUG did an audit of the Marrickville Council area. We identified and documented every major pot hole, drainage problem, missing pram ramp, locations needing bike racks, etc, particularly on council bike routes. Since then, council staff have been making excellent progress at fixing all the problems and installing racks. This exercise is very useful and successful and highly recommended to other BUGS.
