STREET CLOSURES

How a few cars put buses in slow lane

Date: June 26 2007

Jordan Baker Transport Reporter

COUNCILS are often outspoken critics of public transport, especially in the city, but State Transit has hit back, saying they could improve things by reducing on-street parking.

Removing on-street parking along Elizabeth Street in the city alone would make life easier for about 4600 passengers every day, said the chief executive of State Transit, John Lee.

He called on the City of Sydney and other councils, such as Mosman Council, to consider the effect of parking on congestion and delays to bus services.

"The CBD is well served by off-street parking - there is enough for everyone," Mr Lee said.

On-street parking on either side of Elizabeth Street, for example, only fits about 20 cars paying $4.40 an hour. The stretch becomes a bus lane for about three hours in morning and evening peaks.

Mr Lee also called for the removal of about 10 parking spaces in Mosman, between Cowles Road and Brady Street on Military Road. Sydney Buses operates about 1000 buses a week through Spit Junction.

"We estimate that the 10 car parks between Cowles Road and Brady Street on Military Road at Spit Junction are responsible for 500 hours of bus delay each year," Mr Lee said.

The Mayor of Mosman, Denise Wilton, said the council would be willing to discuss improvements with State Transit.

She said the council was looking at requiring developments along main roads to build bus bays, with shelters and seats, to allow buses to pull off the road, improving traffic flow.

"Certainly we wouldn't like to see 24-hour clearways on the corridors, because that would be the end of all our businesses," she said.

A spokesman for the Lord Mayor said the City was happy to discuss proposals to improve public transport. He said there were traffic problems and delays in the CBD because of existing congestion. Sydney needed a sustainable and long-term solution, such as light rail, which could move people quickly.

A pictorial assay on the damage wrought to businesses when whole streets are quarantined to vehicle traffic and/or parking. Let's cave into the motoring and petroleum lobby groups and return cars to all these potential thoroughfares to ensure the businesses survive. Or maybe...
