Linemarking complete - the lane is now legal.

We met with council staff and architect to discuss remaining work for Wilson Street contraflow lane. We agreed on the following actions (they are paraphrased since I didn't take any notes during the meeting, just relying on my dubious memory!)

Stage 1:

• Contraflow lane to be repainted so that green is more visible and less dirty. Will use an epoxy or equivalent material similar to what is used in bus lanes. (But not the abrasive bus lane surface coat used in some locations in Sydney)
• Bike symbols and arrows to be located at same road chainage in each direction. Bike symbols to be equal size in each direction- 1100 mm wide x 1800 mm high
• Move arrows that point in eastern direction to centre of lane
• Thick epoxy white line to delineate edge of bike lane. No cat eyes or tactile lines.
• Consolidation of some signage onto single poles where appropriate.
• Route signage
• Additional bike lane signage
• Additional signage and paint markings for vehicles entering from Watkin St
• Better medians that don't move when hit by cars. (those rubber kerbs separating the contraflow lane from the regular lane)
• Reshape traffic island/median east of brown street to allow cars to turn the corner without entering contraflow lane

Stage 2:

• Erskineville Road intersection signalling
• Erskineville Road intersection linemarking (stage 1 or 2?)

Possible future improvements:

• Pram ramp at north-western corner of Wilson-Burren intersection
• Reshape or removal of burren st round-about to make reduce the sharp angle cyclists have to turn when entering the contraflow lane
• Additional pedestrian crossings, bike lanes and contraflow bike lanes at Wilson St-Erskineville Rd intersection

Plus some other things I can't recall. We will receive an update from Council when the report is updated with the meeting outcomes.

Wilson Street Contra-Flow You can see here that the fantastic green contra-flow lane, which allows bikes to get from the "bicycle highway" to King Street in Newtown, has a missing piece. Council has now agreed to proceed, as per this design diagram (0.5Mb pdf). In the diagram, the line which sweeps around is the existing kerb. The pencil or rocket shaped, "paved" island is the Arup design. The new Council design is a bigger island (in green) which will be able to support one or two much better trees than the current poor Jacaranda. The current footpath is maintained, a new bike lane beside, then the island and the traffic lane. New pedestrian ramps (in pink) for crossing the street are a bonus.
