Dear Dr Rissel Thank you for your letter about my policies on issues relating to cycling. I am answering for all the greens candidates in this election. The policy of The Greens consistently, and for this election as well, is to support a diversity in sustainable transport of which cycling is an important and integral part. In addition to the transport aspects of cycling The Greens are also conscious of the public heath and wellbeing benefits of cycling and its importance to the community. We are aware of the sad state of cycling facilities in Ashfield and will seek to have council embark on a urgent improvement programme. The Ashfield Bicycle plan is now over 15 years old and is in urgent need of review and we would be seeking to have a revised plan which recognised the need to be proactive and adopt affirmative action to encourage cycling as a genuine transport choice for both recreation and primary transport and for both the young and adults. The Greens have an extensive policy on transport at http://www.nsw.greens.org.au/policies/Transport.php and in particular the sections 26, 27 and 28 on cycles is comprehensive. Cycling as a solution are also part of our policies on Children and Young People and on Health at http://www.nsw.greens.org.au/policies/policies.php The Greens are prepared to work with any group seeking the promote healthy life styles and will always be available to groups like AshBUG to discuss the issues and seek attention by council and the government in progressing better cycling outcomes. If you need further info or wish to have a joint meeting please don't hesitate to call me. cheers Colin Jones Greens candidate for Ashfield (02) 8293 4504
